The Power of Consistency: My 2-Year Running Streak Journey

Maintaining a consistent running routine can be challenging, especially when faced with setbacks like injuries. As someone who has always struggled with injury, I know firsthand how difficult it can be to keep a running streak alive. However, after my streak of 683 days ended, I set a new goal: to surpass the 2-year mark. Now, I’m proud to say that I’ve achieved this milestone, and I want to share my journey with you.

Understanding the Challenge

Overcoming injuries has been a constant battle throughout my running journey. In the past, I’ve had to cut my running streaks short due to various setbacks, which can be physically and mentally challenging. It’s easy to get discouraged when you’re forced to take time off from something you love, but I’ve learned that it’s essential to listen to your body and give it the rest it needs to recover.

When I first started my current running streak, I was determined to make it last. However, a few months in, I experienced a minor injury that threatened to derail my progress. Instead of giving up, I reached out to my coach, Jen, for guidance. She helped me adjust my training plan and provided the support and motivation I needed to keep going. Thanks to her encouragement, I was able to push through the setback and continue my streak.

Techniques for Improvement

One of the biggest changes I’ve made in my running routine is making my off-day runs easy. I can maintain my streak without putting too much stress on my body by keeping these runs at a minimum of one mile and a relaxed pace. This approach has been crucial in helping me avoid injuries and stay consistent with my running.

I put this technique into action during a recent long-distance race. Instead of pushing myself to the limit on every training run leading up to the event, I incorporated easy, one-mile runs on my off days. This allowed me to arrive at the starting line feeling fresh and prepared rather than burnt out and exhausted. As a result, I could maintain a strong, steady pace throughout the race and finish with a personal best time.

Gaining Insights

Throughout my running journey, which began in 2011, I’ve learned that there’s always room for improvement and growth. One of my most important lessons is to never stop learning and questioning. By staying curious and open-minded, I’ve identified areas where I can make positive changes in my running routine, such as incorporating strength training.

The insights I’ve gained from my 2-year running streak have helped me become a better runner and translated into other aspects of my life. I’ve learned the value of consistency, dedication, and adaptability, which are skills that can be applied to any challenge or goal.
