Why Every Runner Needs a Four-Legged Running Partner
2 min read
There is something about running with a dog that changes the whole experience. No headphones, no pace tracking, no split times. Just you, the road, and a partner who is genuinely thrilled to be there every single time.
My running buddy does not care if we hit a PR or if we walk half the route. The enthusiasm is the same at mile one and mile five. That kind of energy is contagious. On days when motivation is low, having a dog staring at you with "are we going?" eyes is better than any pre-workout.
A few things I have learned running with dogs:
- Start slow. Dogs need to build endurance just like people. Short runs first, then build up.
- Watch the heat. Pavement gets hot. Early mornings or evenings are best, especially in the tropics.
- Bring water for both of you. A collapsible bowl weighs nothing and makes a big difference.
- Let them sniff. The run is for both of you. A few stops to investigate a bush will not ruin your time.
The best runs are not the fastest ones. They are the ones where you look down, see your dog grinning back at you, and realize this is exactly what both of you needed today.
